Michaelmas ~ St. Michael Festival

{crowns by Mama, swords by Papa}

The kids celebrated Michaelmas, the feast of St. Michael, at the Waldorf school that they attend. We went to the festival in the late morning and watched them act out the story of St. Michael slaying the dragon. This festival that is close to the Autumn Equinox, is also celebrated as the "festival of strong will". The story is supposed to help children face their own challenges, both inside and outside dragons in their lives.

Golden light is turning grey,
Mists begin to rule the day.
Bare the trees, their branches lift;
Clouds of dead leaves earthward drift.
Through the field the farmer goes,
Seeds of ripened corn he sows;
Trusts the earth will hold it warm,
Shelter it from cold and harm.
For he knows, that warmth and light
Live there, hidden from our sight;
And beneath a sheltering wing,
Deep below, new life will spring!
Deep below, deep below, new life will spring!
