Friday Play

Play is often talked about as if it were
a relief from serious learning.
But for children play is serious learning.
Play is really the work of childhood.

{telling stories with Cassie}

Last fall we didn't get to the beach very much. I was just too hot and tired in my last trimester of pregnancy to find the energy to pack everything up. We live about 25 minutes from the nice beaches of Rincon. That is just far enough that you have to plan it out a bit more with bringing a cooler full of food and water, sand toys and pfds, water jugs to wash off the sand before leaving, a change of clothes for the kids... I have so much more energy now that I have a little two month old at my side and two kids to help me out. So we've been getting to the beach more and I've decided to make a Friday beach day goal. This helps us finish up Pieter's school work earlier in the week to have the day open for playing in the tide pools. Fred Rogers knows what he is talking about. Play is just as important as the three R's ~ reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic.

And by the way, it sure is amazing to have some friends near by that are retired at the age of 35. Cassie and Britton always have time for us, whether it is spending time at the beach with us (check out their post from the same day), welcoming us to their finca for a picnic on their roof while looking at the ocean and chasing turkeys and chickens around the yard, or going to local festivals. Moving isn't easy. As we are nearing in on two years in Puerto Rico, their friendship has really made our new life here better.

  1. What a great thing to do on Fridays! I hope you keep it up, if not every week, then fairly often. These days will be so memorable for the kids, I know it is a lot of work but worth it. We have a surprise day off tomorrow due to bad weather so I think we will be spending some of it at the library. (bad weather is supposed to start in the early afternoon so we should be ok). It's been a little while since I took everyone to the library, I have become a fan of ordering online and then just picking up the books at the drive-thru. David still needs to be watched but he doesn't just go straight to the books to pull them all off the shelves anymore - what a relief!
