Going South

Photos below by Steffi Wolf

We drove south today with our friends to show them the beautiful salt flats and beaches of Cabo Rojo. I'm always amazed at how quickly the landscape dries out, to go from a rainforest in Mayaguez to a desert in Cabo Rojo in a half hour drive. Florian and Felix swim like fish - it was hard to get them out of the water. They were determined to find a conch shell to take home. Amazingly enough after so much diving, they found one! But it was occupied, so back into the water it went.

No visit to Western Puerto Rico is complete without visiting the beautiful beaches of Rincon. We stopped at the lighthouse first and then headed to Steps Beach. The kids are having so much fun with Florian and Felix - these boys are the sweetest visitors! They found a long bamboo log and pulled it out into the water. Then they proceeded to ride it like a horse! I love seeing kids being creative.

Exploring the Station with Friends

Some friendships just keep on lasting. I made a friend with a German exchange student in high school that lived down the road with me with her relatives for a year. We had such fun. I later went to visit her in Germany and she visited me in San Francisco when I was teaching environmental education in the Santa Cruz mountains. Now, years later, she brought her family for a visit to Puerto Rico! Here are the kids with Florian and Felix at the Tropical Research Agriculture Station
