Grandpa Dave’s Spaghetti Sauce




I've had the pleasure to have some of this amazing spaghetti sauce at my uncle's home in Wisconsin. I'm slowly working at collecting family recipes and this is another great one!

Grandpa Dave’s Spaghetti Sauce
1 lb ground beef
1 lb HOT Italian sausage
1 28 oz. can crushed tomatoes
1 28 oz. can tomato sauce
2 12 oz. cans tomato paste
4 oz. mushrooms, sliced
2 tablespoons minced garlic
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
2 medium onions, halved and sliced
2 large green peppers, quartered and sliced
1 cup red wine
Red pepper to taste
  • Brown the ground chuck, add to slow cooker (as you will all other ingredients).
  • Brown the HOT sausage, without the casings, add to slow cooker.
  • Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, mushrooms and garlic.
  • Brown onions and peppers in the olive oil. Add to slow cooker.
  • Add the red wine and stir (consistency will look like first photo).
  • Set the slow cooker on med or high, cover and cook for 4 to 8 hours depending on cooker. Stir every hour or so. 
  • When the top layer of the sauce begins to develop a dark “slick” of liquid (see second photo, toward the end of the process) stir and add hot pepper to taste. No other herbs or spices required but you are free to add if you want to.
Makes 4 quarts
