Catedral de San Juan Bautista

{The convent has since been changed into a luxury hotel, El Convento}

Puerto Rico was named by Columbus "San Juan Bautista" in 1493 on his second voyage to the New World. Then in 1521 Ponce de León, the first appointed governor in 1508, named the settlement City of Puerto Rico (rich port). A few years later, with some confusion over the names, the names were switched and the settlement became known as San Juan and the island Puerto Rico. León had a great impact on island and the Taínos in those few years before dying in 1521 and now is buried in this beautiful cathedral.
