First Strawberries

We found a wonderful strawberry farm just down the road from our favorite dairy. The berries are just bursting and it looks like we'll be able to head back for more next week when our extended van Ee family arrives. This time we enjoyed picking with some new friends, Finn and Rayna.

Ella spent a couple of days with us and it was wonderful! Oh, I would love to have this sweet spirit around more. Sweet love on the way home.

A Dragon-Fly

A Dragon-Fly

When the heat of the summer
Made drowsy the land,
A dragon-fly came
And sat on my hand,
With its blue jointed body,
And wings like spun glass,
It lit on my fingers
As though they were grass.

New Friends

Summers at Au Sable are magical with water and trees to play in and farms to visit. This year has been even more special for Juliana and Pieter. They have been making some new friends - Grace and Elliot are new at Au Sable this summer and we are so excited to have them here. It is going to be sad when our time ends, but in the meantime, we are going to keep on playing!

Dreams in the Orchard

One of my favorite reasons for coming back to Michigan every summer is to catch up with friends. Friends that reach back to the beginning of one's adulthood. Brittney and Ryan are just those. Starting back in 1995 when we met at Au Sable, the friendship becomes more and more with each year that passes. Sometimes it is only a dinner or two in a year, but it doesn't matter. It is almost as though no time has gone by. These dear friends just bought some lovely land with an orchard on it that needs some taming and love. They have dreams for organic apples and a beautiful home. I love it! We spent an last night here, having a fire and hobo meals, good wine, and walks through the locust trees with bees buzzing everywhere.

Sailing with Daddy

Ben loves to take out the sailboat on the lake when we are here. He has found a new little partner. Juliana really likes to go with him. She has been known to even fall asleep for a nap on the go. She just sits in the cockpit and rests her head against the boat and nods off. Sounds like a nice afternoon to me!

On our way to town today we saw this pretty flock of wild turkeys.

Real Milk

We so love our time in Michigan, not just for the friends and lake, but for the amazing farming and local foods here. Our favorite has to be Shelter Family Dairy. Nothing can compete with grass-fed milk! And we love the ice cream they make, too!

Visiting Friends (and giant rhubarb!)

We are catching up with friends in Ann Arbor for the weekend. It is always fun to see Paul and Lois and to play with their dogs! And the gardens Paul develops and cultivates for always amaze me. Here is some giant rhubarb for us to take back to Au Sable!

Paint the Lilies

Pieter has made some new friends here at Au Sable. They got creative with some chalk paint and dipped the lily of the valley in it! Beautiful!

Lilies in the Cabin

This year we are staying in Larch House, a beautiful cabin at the Pines. It is one of the oldest cabins on Big Twin Lake. While it is just one room, the beauty of the woodwork makes up for any frustrations in space. This morning I brought in some of the lily of the valley that is blooming up a storm all around the cabin.
