On Sunday, we went to Montebello, a mission church on the outskirts of Merida. While Jan preaches, Darlene teaches Sunday school and the older kids had a great time joining in. Juliana, the crawling machine, loved the gleaming floors and the rest of the kids couldn't be torn away from the toys outside afterwards. But, tummies called and we headed down to the south side of the city for a wonderful meal at a restaurant that Mimi and Aaron brought us to, Restaurante El Principe Tutul-Xiu.

After we finished, we made sure to get a picture of Juliana with the staff, wearing the traditional huipil. And all the rest of the kids had a great time with the playground right in the restaurant. It was the perfect combination for a family full of children!

We headed out for a walk on el Paseo de Montejo with the whole family to see the Christmas lights. These cousins just love playing together and have a blast all the time. We started at the base of the promenade at the park all decorated for Christmas. Right off the park is lovely hotel, Hotel Casa San Angel. I could really handle staying here for a night next time we come.

Then we went to Terraza del Norte, one of the best places we go to every time we visit. I think this is my favorite meal in Merida.

Exploring the market

{habañeros}

{dried fish}

I love going to the market in Merida. This is probably one of my favorite things to do when we visit Ben's parents. It is just a quick bus ride to downtown. All the fresh fruits and vegetables piled high in dazzling colors, clothing, household goods, fish and so many other things to see. The bustle is fun, hot, sweaty and tiring.

Animaya

Being in the big city afforded lots of fun to us, including not one, but two zoos! Animaya, Parque Del Bicentenario, is a new zoo on the outskirts of Merida and is an intriguing mix of zoo, park and cultural celebration of the Mayan heritage. The tower of carvings dominates the landscape reminding you that we are not far from the ancient ruins that dot the Yucatan Peninsula.

I've begun calling Pieter an "Oma magnet" as he is always by her side.

We went on a safari ride through the park. It was great fun to be so close to all the animals! The emus were very curious about our queue as we waited for our ride.

We found the only shade in the center of the park, at the tower. Pieter enjoyed soaking his feet in the cool water. Some wonderful action photos by his Opa.

Who knew there were so many playgrounds in the world? Pieter can spy these a mile away!
