Adventures with Oma and Opa

We so enjoyed a week with Oma and Opa, lots of fun and play for Pieter and some rest for Mama. It is not quite the same around here now that Oma is gone, but we are managing. Here are a few shots of the fun we had over the past week. When Pieter sees these pictures, he says "Ma? Ma?" and definitely is wondering where she has gone.

Summer fruit

What to do with all the cherries? Last week I made cherry pie for the first time and froze five bags of cherries for five more pies this winter. Sour Cherry Jam was next on the list. Last summer I started using Pomona's Universal Pectin, which is amazing. It allows you to make excellant jam with little or no sugar. For example, with the normal pectin you would use 4 cups of fruit and 4-5 cups of sugar. With Pomona's, you use 3/4 cup of sugar and get some very tasty jam. You actually taste the fruit and not a jelled mass of sugar. You just need to pick more fruit to get the same amount of jam!
And last night we enjoyed Sour Cherry Crumb Cake which was quite yummy. I added pastry whole wheat flour to up the nutrient density. Everyone liked it! Now the sour cherries are gone. It looks like I'm going to have to find the next fruit of the season. Blueberries, anyone?

Cherries

Cherry picking in northern Michigan reminds me of the story books I read as a child, with all the trees lined up just so. Virginia Lee Burton's The Little House is one that sticks out in my memory. The cherries, bursting with color on the trees, overlook the many lakes of the area. We filled up two buckets (27 pounds!) with sour cherries and headed back to the market building for the pitting.
When the pitting process got a little slow for P, he got to have the most fun of the day - tractors!
Now to make some cherry pies!

Sunrise

One advantage to having a child that wakes up with the birds are all the beautiful sunrises to see. I enjoyed so many of them on Little Twin Lake this summer. Along with this amazing view each morning was the call of the resident loon on the lake. I don't think I can ever get used to that beautiful sound.

Big Twin Lake

Big Twin Lake is beautiful as ever and calm again now that the July 4th weekend is over. The great water table lowering around here is still in effect. Au Sable's bigger beach has really greened up over the past ten years. Here a few views for you to see. Can you believe that the poplars and pines have already established themselves?

Playing at the Farm

Pieter loved seeing the calves and playing at Shelter Family Dairy!

Au Sable

Our summer adventures are continuing at Au Sable, a bit of paradise in this world. The loon calls early in the morning on Little Twin Lake - a just reward to a mama with a little boy that wakes up in the wee hours of the morning. The days have been perfect with highs in the 70s and 80s. Strawberries have been picked and made into jam. Hikes at Au Sable are memorable and so fun to see this little boy there.
