Roughlock Falls in Winter

Today we hiked up to Roughlock Falls in Spearfish Canyon. It was a beautiful, warm winter day. We soaked up the sun and enjoyed being outside with friends. We checked out lichen, moss, liverworts and lots of other life.
{Black-Capped Chickadee, Poecile atricapillus}
{Paper Birch, Betula papyrifera}
{American Dipper, Cinclus mexicanus}
This rare, beautiful bird gave us quite a show. I have never seen an American Dipper before, but I hope to see more, as this bird is a permanent resident of the Black Hills. It has a transparent eye lid that allows it to go under the water to feed on aquatic insects. It bobbed completely under water just like a duck. So amazing.
In just a couple months spring will be here and the falls will be a lush green. Check out our visit there last May.
